How to do it, step by step
- Open or drag the .ply file.
- Check in the scene that it is a surface (mesh) and not just points.
- Check the “Size in the STL” and the unit.
- Click Convert and download.
When this is useful
Print the mesh from a 3D scanner
Convert the mesh’s PLY to STL.
Print the result of photogrammetry
If the program exported a mesh as PLY, convert it to STL.
Tips for a good result
- A point cloud appears as loose points in the scene; a mesh appears as a surface.
- If it is a point cloud, generate the mesh in the scanner’s program and convert again.
What this tool does not do
- A point cloud (PLY without faces) cannot become STL: the app refuses the conversion, and explains why.
- STL stores no colors or textures: only the shape. Colors from a scan are left out.
- The app does not repair the model: it does not close holes, does not check whether the mesh is closed and does not trim parts. Scans usually have flaws, and the slicer (or a mesh editing program) may need to fix them.
- The STL file does not store the unit. The app writes in millimeters, which is what most slicers expect, and shows the final size before downloading: check that it matches the real object.
- Files of up to 400 MB. Everything is done in the browser, without sending the model.
- The app converts and shows the model: it does not edit the mesh or the textures.
Frequently asked questions
- What happens with a point cloud?
- The app warns that the STL would be empty and does not generate the file.
