iPhone scan to 3D printing: convert to STL

Depending on the scanning app, the result comes out as USDZ, OBJ, GLB or PLY, and the 3D printer asks for STL. Open the scan here, check the size and download the STL already in millimeters and with the Z axis up, as slicers expect. Everything happens in the browser, without sending the model.

Demo model
Convert to STLGeometry only — for 3D printing

Size in the STL: 3,628.8 × 4,366.5 × 3,332.4 mm — too large for most printers: check the unit.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Export the scan from the app as USDZ, OBJ, GLB or PLY and open the file here (for OBJ, select the .mtl and the images together, if any).
  2. Rotate the model and check the dimensions and the mesh.
  3. Under “Model unit”, confirm Meters (the usual for scans) and see the “Size in the STL”, in millimeters.
  4. Leave “Z axis up” ticked and click Convert and download.
  5. Open the STL in the slicer and check the scale before printing.

When this is useful

Print an object you scanned

From the phone scan to the file the slicer understands.

Reproduce a part you cannot find ready-made

Scan, convert and print a copy or a replacement part.

See the real size before spending filament

The screen shows the final size in millimeters.

Tips for a good result

  • If the “Size in the STL” looks too small or too big, change the unit: the app warns when the model ends up smaller than 5 mm or bigger than 1 meter.
  • The conversion keeps all the scan’s triangles; for a lighter file, reduce the mesh in an editing program.
  • To see the model before printing, use the capture button and save an image.

What this tool does not do

  • STL stores no colors or textures: only the shape. Colors from a scan are left out.
  • The app does not repair the model: it does not close holes, does not check whether the mesh is closed and does not trim parts. Scans usually have flaws, and the slicer (or a mesh editing program) may need to fix them.
  • The STL file does not store the unit. The app writes in millimeters, which is what most slicers expect, and shows the final size before downloading: check that it matches the real object.
  • If the scan is a point cloud (PLY without faces), there is no surface to print and the app refuses the conversion.
  • Files of up to 400 MB. Everything is done in the browser, without sending the model.
  • The app converts and shows the model: it does not edit the mesh or the textures.

Frequently asked questions

Does the STL keep the scan’s color?
No. STL stores only the shape. To keep the color, use GLB, GLTF or USDZ.
Why does the size need to be checked?
STL does not state the unit. Scans are usually in meters and slicers read millimeters: without the conversion, the object would appear a thousand times smaller.
My scan is in another format.
The app opens GLB, GLTF, OBJ, STL, PLY, FBX, DAE and USDZ.
