JPG to PNG: convert keeping the image free of new losses

Converting JPG to PNG is for when the program or site requires PNG, or to edit the image without accumulating new compression losses. It is worth remembering what this conversion does not do: it does not give back the quality the JPG has already lost, and the resulting PNG is usually much bigger.

When this is useful

Programs that only accept PNG

Some editors, games and design platforms ask for PNG.

Edit without new losses

Working in PNG prevents each save from compressing the image again.

Prepare an image for cut-out

PNG supports transparency; you can cut out the background in another editor and save without losses.

Tips for a good result

  • If the photo will only be viewed or sent, keep the JPG: the PNG becomes much bigger.
  • If the goal is transparency, convert here and remove the background in an editor: the PNG generated has no transparency on its own.

What this tool does not do

  • It does not improve or restore the original JPG’s quality.
  • It does not create transparency: the PNG comes out with the same background as the photo.
  • The file usually grows a lot with photos.

Frequently asked questions

Does the PNG have better quality?
No. It only prevents new losses from then on; what the JPG already lost does not come back.
Why did the file get so big?
PNG stores all the pixels without lossy compression, and in photos that takes up a lot of space.
