Convert a video without losing quality: when the swap is only the container

Many video formats are just different “boxes” for the same content. When the new format accepts the same codec as the file, the app copies the picture and sound without re-encoding: the conversion is fast and loses no quality. That is what happens, for example, when moving an H.264 MOV to MP4 with the Quality on Auto.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Select the video.
  2. Choose the output format and leave the Quality on Auto.
  3. Click Convert video: if the codec is compatible, the result comes out in a few seconds.
  4. Compare size and picture in the two players and download.

When this is useful

Compatibility between devices and programs

Swap MOV, MKV or TS for MP4 without touching the picture.

Archive without new compression

Keep the original quality when changing the container.

Tips for a good result

  • MP4, MOV and MKV in this tool use H.264 and AAC: videos in that standard are the ones that benefit from direct copying.
  • If the conversion time is long, it is a sign the video was re-encoded.

What this tool does not do

  • When the file’s codec differs from what the format requires (such as HEVC to MP4 or any video to WebM), the app re-encodes and there is some loss.
  • The High, Medium and Compact options always re-encode.
  • The app does not show whether there was direct copying or re-encoding: the time is the best indicator.
  • The new file carries the “WebFaz.com” credit in the metadata (comment and artist).

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether it lost quality?
Compare the size: a direct copy ends up almost the same size as the original. If the file changed size a lot, there was re-encoding.
Can I convert to WebM losslessly?
No. WebM uses other codecs, so the video is always re-encoded.
