How to do it, step by step
- Select the MKV file.
- Keep the Quality on Auto.
- Click Convert video.
- Download the MP4.
When this is useful
Recordings from screen-capture and game programs
Many recorders save as MKV; MP4 is easier to share.
Watch on a TV or phone
Devices usually accept MP4 more easily.
Tips for a good result
- MKV from recorders usually has H.264, and the swap to MP4 is fast.
- For a smaller file, use WebFaz Video Compressor afterwards.
What this tool does not do
- Embedded subtitles and extra audio tracks from the MKV are not guaranteed in the new file: check the result.
- Codecs other than H.264 require re-encoding, which is slower.
- One video at a time.
- The new file carries the “WebFaz.com” credit in the metadata (comment and artist).
Frequently asked questions
- Does the conversion lose quality?
- Not when it only swaps the container (Auto quality and compatible codecs). With re-encoding, there is some loss.
- What about the MKV’s subtitles?
- They are not guaranteed in the generated MP4. To work with subtitles, see WebFaz Subtitles.
