HEIC to PNG: convert iPhone photos without lossy recompression

If you want to keep the iPhone photo in a universal format and without JPG’s lossy compression, PNG is the way out. It also preserves transparency (useful in cut-out images). The file is usually much bigger than a JPG, so it is for when quality matters more than size.

When this is useful

Edit the photo in programs that do not read HEIC

Many graphics editors and design sites accept PNG, but not HEIC.

Archive an important photo

PNG does not lose detail with each save, unlike JPG.

Screenshots and images with transparent areas

PNG keeps the transparency when the original file has it.

Tips for a good result

  • A 12-megapixel photo as PNG can be several times bigger than as JPG: check the size shown after the conversion.
  • For ordinary photos that will only be viewed or sent, HEIC to JPG produces much smaller files.

What this tool does not do

  • PNG recovers nothing: the photo has already gone through HEIC compression, and PNG only avoids additional loss.
  • Original color profiles and HDR are not preserved.
  • Converter limits: 40 megapixels, 16,384 pixels per side, 50 photos and 200 MB per queue.

Frequently asked questions

Is PNG better than JPG for photos?
It is better for avoiding new losses and for transparency, but the file is much bigger. For sharing, JPG is usually the practical choice.
Does the app show how much the file grew?
Yes. After the conversion the original and the new size appear, with the percentage difference.
