How to do it, step by step
- Select the MP4 (or M4V) video.
- If you like, choose the bitrate (192k is the default), the channels and the volume.
- Click Extract audio and follow the progress.
- Listen in the player and download the MP3.
When this is useful
Keep only the music or speech from a video
The MP3 takes up much less space than the video.
Listen to a class or talk on the phone, without a screen
The audio file is lighter for listening on the move.
Reuse the sound in another job
Use the track in a presentation or an audio editor.
Tips for a good result
- At 192 kbps, each minute of audio comes to about 1.4 MB; at 320 kbps, about 2.4 MB.
- To listen to just a part, turn on “Trim clip” and enter start and end.
- To turn the speech into text, send the audio to WebFaz Transcription.
What this tool does not do
- MP3 is a lossy format: the quality never exceeds that of the audio that was in the video.
- One video at a time, and the extraction depends on the device’s memory: very large videos may fail.
- The video must have an audio track; if it does not, the app warns you.
- The new file carries the “WebFaz.com” credit in the metadata (comment and artist).
Frequently asked questions
- Is the original video changed?
- No. The app reads the video and creates a new file with only the sound.
- Which bitrate should I choose?
- For voice, 128k is enough. For music, 192k or 256k. At 320k the file is bigger and the difference is small for most people.
