VTT to SRT: convert subtitles for use in any player

SRT is the subtitle format most accepted by computer players, televisions and editors. Open the VTT file and download the SRT: the lines and times are kept, and what exists only in VTT is left out. The conversion happens in the browser, without sending the file.

Open or drag a subtitle, ZIP or videoSubtitles up to 5 MB · ZIP up to 256 MB · MP4/MOV and MKV/WebM up to 2 GB

Files stay on your device.

Input

JSON: array of objects with start and end in seconds and text with the line. TXT and Markdown: each non-empty line becomes a block.

Output

Watch and fix the subtitles

Video and editing stay on the device. Review text and times and apply the corrections before sending.

Subtitle lines

0 of 0 lines

Open a subtitle or use Add line to create from scratch.

Reading review · 0 line(s) with warnings

Warnings help review long lines, fast reading, more than two lines, durations and overlaps. They are adjustable references, do not block export and may be intentional in dialogue.

The output uses the applied corrections.

Continue in the video editor or the text editor.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Open or drag the .vtt file (or paste the content into the Input box).
  2. Check the result in the Output box.
  3. Click Download SRT, or Copy result.

When this is useful

Use a website’s subtitles in a computer player

Many programs and televisions open SRT, but not VTT.

Edit the subtitles in a program that only understands SRT

Convert, edit and, if needed, go back to VTT.

Tips for a good result

  • The downloaded file takes the original’s name with the .srt extension.
  • The blocks are numbered in order, starting from 1.

What this tool does not do

  • Comments (NOTE), position and alignment from the VTT do not carry over to the SRT: in the test, “position:50% align:center” and a NOTE line were left out.
  • Italic and bold tags (<i>, <b>) are kept, unless you choose to remove them.
  • Subtitle files of up to 5 MB; ZIP of up to 256 MB; video of up to 2 GB.
  • Everything happens in the browser: the file is not sent. The only exception is the optional translation, which sends only the text of the lines.
