How to do it, step by step
- Select the photos.
- Under Extracted attributes, see what the file holds (use Filter attributes to find a field).
- Click Clean this (or Clean all).
- Download the clean version.
When this is useful
Hide the device model and the program used
Camera model, phone and editing software disappear from the file.
Remove the exact date and time of capture
Useful when you do not want to reveal when the photo was taken.
Publish a portfolio without technical traces
The file goes with only the image.
Tips for a good result
- Use the filter to look for fields such as Make, Model, Software or Date.
- If the goal is just to remove the location, the page about removing a photo’s location explains the risk in more detail.
What this tool does not do
- In JPG, PNG and WebP the file is rewritten from the pixels: the color profile is also removed, and colors may change slightly on screens that depend on it. In HEIC, HEIF, AVIF and GIF the image is not touched.
- JPG and WebP are recompressed at 95% quality, with a small loss (HEIC, HEIF, AVIF and GIF are not recompressed).
- The file always comes out in the same format it came in (HEIC stays HEIC, GIF stays GIF). TIFF and PSD are not accepted, because cleaning them would require writing another format.
Frequently asked questions
- What is EXIF?
- It is the set of information the camera or phone writes inside the photo: device, date, settings and, sometimes, location.
- Does the image look different?
- Visually it is the same. Colors may vary a little, since the color profile is also removed.
- How do I know my file is not sent to any server?
- The cleaning happens in your browser, and you can check it: open the developer tools (F12 key), go to the Network tab and clean a file; no request goes out with the file. In our own test, between choosing the file and downloading the clean version, there was no request to external servers. When it opens, the page communicates with services such as Google Analytics, but that sends only the page visit (address and title), never the file, its name or the data read.
