How to do it, step by step
- Select the photos (JPG, PNG or WebP).
- Check the panel: the Privacy risk badge shows High when there is GPS or camera data, and the ⚠️ icon marks the sensitive attributes.
- Click Clean all.
- Download the files with Download clean: they come out ending in _clean.
When this is useful
Advertise something for sale
Product photos taken at home can give your address to whoever downloads the original image.
Send photos by email or as a document
In those sends, the file usually goes whole, with the location included.
Photos of children, home or work
Remove the GPS before any open sharing.
Tips for a good result
- Check the result by loading the clean photo again: the panel should show few attributes and low risk.
- To turn off GPS on the next photos, adjust the location permission of the camera app on the phone.
- iPhone photos in HEIC or HEIF are also accepted and come back as HEIC: the EXIF is erased inside the file itself, without converting to another format.
What this tool does not do
- The location disappears, but the image still shows what appears in it: facades, signs, windows and reflections can reveal where it was taken.
- JPG and WebP are rewritten by the browser at 95% quality, so there is a small loss; PNG loses no quality; HEIC, HEIF, AVIF and GIF are not rewritten: the file is the same, just without the metadata.
- The file always comes out in the same format it came in (HEIC stays HEIC, GIF stays GIF). TIFF and PSD are not accepted, because cleaning them would require writing another format.
- Different platforms and apps treat metadata in different ways: the clean file guarantees the location does not go along, wherever you send it.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I know whether my photo has a location?
- Select the photo here: if there is GPS, the risk appears as High and the latitude and longitude fields are marked with ⚠️.
- Does the clean photo lose quality?
- In JPG and WebP there is a light recompression (95% quality). In PNG, no.
- Is the photo sent to any server?
- No. The analysis and cleaning happen in your browser.
- How do I know my file is not sent to any server?
- The cleaning happens in your browser, and you can check it: open the developer tools (F12 key), go to the Network tab and clean a file; no request goes out with the file. In our own test, between choosing the file and downloading the clean version, there was no request to external servers. When it opens, the page communicates with services such as Google Analytics, but that sends only the page visit (address and title), never the file, its name or the data read.
