How to do it, step by step
- Select the file (photo, PDF, DOCX, XLSX or PPTX).
- Read the Privacy risk badge and the number of Metadata found.
- Use Filter attributes to look for a field or a value.
- If you like, click Clean this and download the version without that data.
When this is useful
Check a file before sending it
See whether it carries an author, location or software you did not want to show.
Find out where a photo came from
Device, software and capture date appear when the file stores them.
Audit company documents
See who appears as the author and who made the last modification.
Tips for a good result
- The ⚠️ next to an attribute indicates potentially identifying data.
- The risk is High with personal data (GPS, author, camera, software), Medium with other informative metadata (such as dates) and Low when there is only technical data.
- Not every file carries metadata: if there is none, the panel shows only the basics (name, size, type).
What this tool does not do
- It reads photos (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, HEIF, AVIF, GIF and BMP; for BMP only basic data appears), videos, audio, PDF, DOCX, XLSX and PPTX. TIFF and PSD are not accepted.
- It shows the file’s metadata, not the content hidden inside it (comments, hidden text or embedded images).
- It does not display the location on a map: it presents the field values.
Frequently asked questions
- Does looking at the metadata change the file?
- No. The analysis only reads the file; nothing is written until you ask to clean.
- Does the file go to any server?
- No. The reading happens in the browser.
- What about videos and audio?
- They are accepted (MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A and others). iPhone HEIC photos too.
- How do I know my file is not sent to any server?
- The cleaning happens in your browser, and you can check it: open the developer tools (F12 key), go to the Network tab and clean a file; no request goes out with the file. In our own test, between choosing the file and downloading the clean version, there was no request to external servers. When it opens, the page communicates with services such as Google Analytics, but that sends only the page visit (address and title), never the file, its name or the data read.
