Remove metadata from a PNG: take out texts, prompts and hidden data

A PNG can carry hidden text blocks: editing program, descriptions and, in AI-generated images, the prompt and other generation parameters. Here you see what the PNG holds and download a copy with only the image, without those blocks.

PNG — one file or several at once

How to do it, step by step

  1. Select the PNG.
  2. See in the attributes whether there are software texts, description or parameters (such as the prompt).
  3. Click Clean this.
  4. Download the clean PNG.

When this is useful

Share AI-generated images without the prompt

Some generators write the prompt inside the PNG; the clean copy goes without it.

Remove the editing program’s name

The software field disappears from the file.

Hand a “clean” image to clients

Only the image, without text blocks.

Tips for a good result

  • In a test, a PNG with software text and generation parameters ended up with only the image blocks after cleaning.
  • If you need to keep the AI parameters, use the advanced mode of WebFaz Image Converter, which archives them separately.

What this tool does not do

  • The PNG is rewritten by the browser from the pixels, with no quality loss, but the color profile, date and text blocks are removed.
  • Transparency is kept; animated images (APNG) may become a still image.
  • The image itself may still reveal visible information (text, faces, brands).

Frequently asked questions

Does the prompt of an AI image stay inside the PNG?
In some generators, yes: it is written in text blocks of the file. The cleaning removes those blocks.
Does it lose quality?
No: the PNG is rewritten losslessly.
How do I know my file is not sent to any server?
The cleaning happens in your browser, and you can check it: open the developer tools (F12 key), go to the Network tab and clean a file; no request goes out with the file. In our own test, between choosing the file and downloading the clean version, there was no request to external servers. When it opens, the page communicates with services such as Google Analytics, but that sends only the page visit (address and title), never the file, its name or the data read.
