How to do it, step by step
- Select the video (MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM or MKV).
- See the panel: the risk badge and the sensitive attributes (⚠️) show what the video carries.
- Click Clean this.
- Download the clean video: it comes out ending in _clean and in the same format.
When this is useful
Publish a video recorded at home
Avoid the location and device going along with the file.
Send videos as a document or by email
In those sends the file usually goes whole, with the tags included.
Hand material to clients
Title, artist and internal comments are left out.
Tips for a good result
- The picture and sound are copied without re-encoding: the clean video is usually almost the same size and takes a few seconds.
- Load the clean video again to check: the panel should show few attributes and low risk.
What this tool does not do
- The file is rewritten by the browser with the tracks copied and without the tags: only the picture, sound and duration go into the new file.
- Tested with MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos generated with GPS, title and artist inside; a real phone video may store data in other structures, so check the result in the panel.
- Files of several GB depend on your device’s memory: the app warns when the video goes over 2 GB.
- The video’s picture still shows what appears in it.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the video lose quality?
- No. The picture and sound are copied without re-encoding.
- Does the format change?
- No. MP4 stays MP4, MOV stays MOV, WebM stays WebM and MKV stays MKV.
- How do I know my file is not sent to any server?
- The cleaning happens in your browser, and you can check it: open the developer tools (F12 key), go to the Network tab and clean a file; no request goes out with the file. In our own test, between choosing the file and downloading the clean version, there was no request to external servers. When it opens, the page communicates with services such as Google Analytics, but that sends only the page visit (address and title), never the file, its name or the data read.
