Remove metadata from a HEIC photo: erase the iPhone GPS and stay HEIC

The iPhone records photos as HEIC, with date, device and the exact location where they were taken. Here the EXIF and XMP are erased inside the file itself, without converting and without re-encoding: the photo stays .heic, the same size, and the image is identical. Everything happens in the browser, without sending the photo to a server.

HEIC, HEIF — one file or several at once

How to do it, step by step

  1. Select the HEIC or HEIF photos (several are fine).
  2. See the panel: the privacy risk and the sensitive attributes marked with ⚠️.
  3. Click Clean all.
  4. Download with Download clean: each photo comes out ending in _clean and stays .heic.

When this is useful

Share iPhone photos without the location

The photo stays HEIC and goes without the GPS of where it was taken.

Advertise something for sale or post on forums

Avoid the photo giving away your home address.

Photos of home, children and work

Remove the GPS before any open sharing.

Tips for a good result

  • The clean photo has the same size and the same image as the original: only the metadata blocks are emptied.
  • Check the result: load the clean photo again and the panel should show few attributes and low risk.
  • On the iPhone, under Settings > Camera > Formats, the Most Compatible option records the next photos as JPG.

What this tool does not do

  • Only the EXIF and XMP are emptied (that is where GPS, device, date and software live). Other information in the file, such as the color profile, is kept.
  • If some program asks for JPG, you need to convert elsewhere: this tool never changes the file’s format.
  • The image still shows what appears in it: facades, signs and reflections can reveal the place.

Frequently asked questions

Does the file stay HEIC?
Yes. The file comes back with the same extension and the same size: only the EXIF and XMP blocks are emptied inside it.
Does the photo quality change?
No. The image is neither decoded nor rewritten; the image data stays exactly the same.
How do I know my file is not sent to any server?
The cleaning happens in your browser, and you can check it: open the developer tools (F12 key), go to the Network tab and clean a file; no request goes out with the file. In our own test, between choosing the file and downloading the clean version, there was no request to external servers. When it opens, the page communicates with services such as Google Analytics, but that sends only the page visit (address and title), never the file, its name or the data read.
