Remove metadata from Word (DOCX): take out the author and last modification

A Word document stores the author’s name, who modified it last, the title, dates and the program used. Before sending the file outside the company or publishing it, clean those properties. The document’s text stays as it is.

DOCX — one file or several at once

How to do it, step by step

  1. Select the .docx file.
  2. See the properties found (Author, Last modified by, Title, dates).
  3. Click Clean this.

When this is useful

Send proposals and contracts to clients

The name of the employee who created the template does not need to go along.

Publish documents on the internet

Avoid exposing the author and the modification history in the properties.

Tips for a good result

  • After cleaning, open the file in Word and check under File information whether the properties are gone.
  • Also review comments and tracked changes, which stay inside the text and are not cleaned by this app.

What this tool does not do

  • It only accepts .docx; old .doc files must be saved as .docx first.
  • Authors of comments and tracked changes, inside the document, are not changed.
  • Images placed in the document keep their own metadata (such as photo GPS): clean them before inserting.
  • The content of the text and headers is not changed.

Frequently asked questions

What is removed?
Author, last modified by, title, subject, description, keywords, dates, revision and application information.
What about photos inside the document?
They keep their metadata. Clean the photos before putting them in the document.
How do I know my file is not sent to any server?
The cleaning happens in your browser, and you can check it: open the developer tools (F12 key), go to the Network tab and clean a file; no request goes out with the file. In our own test, between choosing the file and downloading the clean version, there was no request to external servers. When it opens, the page communicates with services such as Google Analytics, but that sends only the page visit (address and title), never the file, its name or the data read.
