How to send files from iPhone to Android, Windows or Mac with no cable and no sign-up

You take photos on your phone and need them on the computer. Or you want to pass a video from your iPhone to a friend’s Android. AirDrop only solves it between Apple devices; for everything else, the usual exits are sending through a messaging app (which compresses), by email (which limits the size) or plugging in a cable. There is a simpler alternative: send straight from one device to the other over the network both are already on.

Why sending by message or email isn’t always good

  • Messaging apps usually reduce the quality of photos and videos to save data.
  • Email has an attachment size limit and leaves a copy on the sender’s and the recipient’s servers.
  • Cloud services require an account, an upload and then a download: the file travels twice over the internet.
  • A cable works, but you need the right cable, and the iPhone does not always get along with computers that are not Macs.

How direct sending between devices works

WebFaz Drop uses a browser technology called WebRTC, which creates an encrypted connection between two devices. Files and texts go straight from one to the other and do not pass through a WebFaz server. For the devices to find each other, the site needs minimal help: a room name (calculated from your network’s public address, without storing that address) and a message channel that relays only the device name (such as “Blue Fox”), the type (phone or computer) and the signals needed to open the connection. There is no account, no history and no storage of the files.

In practice, the devices on the same Wi-Fi network (or on one of their hotspots) appear to each other on a kind of radar. Each one gets a fun name so you know who is who.

Step by step

  1. On both devices, open WebFaz Drop in the browser. There is nothing to install and no account to create.
  2. Wait for the other device to appear on the screen. It only enters the list after the direct connection really opens.
  3. Tap the destination device and choose the files (or drag them, or paste some text).
  4. On the receiving device, accept the transfer. It is clear who is sending and what.
  5. Save the files: on a phone, to Files or the gallery; several at once can be downloaded in a ZIP.

When the other device doesn’t appear

This is the most important point, because the direct connection only opens when the two devices can see each other on the network. A few reasons:

  • Hotel, school or company networks often isolate devices from each other. On them, the direct connection does not open. Use your home Wi-Fi or your phone’s hotspot.
  • One device on Wi-Fi and another on mobile data are on separate networks, and the code alone does not solve it: both need to be on the same network.
  • In some cases the device is not found automatically (for example, when the network has more than one public address). Then it is worth connecting by code: one device shows a 5-character code (or a QR Code) and the other types or scans it.

Precautions and limits

  • Very large files: receiving is done in the device’s memory, so phones with little memory may not handle a huge file.
  • Keep the screen on while sending; if the connection drops, the transfer is interrupted and the app tells you which file it stopped at.
  • The list of received files is kept on the device for 24 hours, or until you tap “Clear list”.
  • Only accept files from people you know: if someone on the same network has the same app open, they may try to send you something. You always have to accept first.

Who the tool suits best

Photos and videos from the phone to the computer without compressing; documents between two laptops in the same home office; a link or a snippet of text from the phone to the PC; and, of course, the classic iPhone to Android. If the file is too heavy to send anyway, shrink it first by following how to reduce the size of a PDF and a video. And if you are going to send photos to other people, consider removing their location first. The complete usage guide is at How WebFaz Drop works.
